Assignment: PowerPoint Presentations, Sec. 01

Even today, Joe DiMaggio remains a legend of American sports

As you know, this semester you and two classmates will be responsible for a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation and a class hand-out.

By midnight on Friday the 10th, you and two partners should have signed-up for a topic and date. Anyone that has not chosen by this time, will automatically be assigned a partner, topic, and date. All topics and dates are first-come first-served.

Follow these steps:
  1. Click on "Comments" at the end of this post.
  2. In the "Post a Comment" box, leave the group's names (first and last), section, topic, and the preferred date—only one entry per group is required.
Example: David Cortez, Will Jameson, and Kerry Clancy: A Brief History of CNN, Friday 02.10.12

Dates and topics are first-come, first-served. Follow these are the guidelines for the presentation:

Requirements:
  1. The work distribution is up to your group, though it should be somewhat equitable
  2. The presentation must be approximately 15 minutes in length
  3. There should be approximately 12  slides, including at least one video clip (no more than 2-3 minutes in length)
  4. Must include a handout outlining your presentation (25 copies)
  5. On the day of your presentation, email both your presentation and handout to me at dhdelao@gmail.com.
The best presentations will:
  • Open with cover and introduction slides
  • First contextualize the topic, then present relevant information
  • Avoid a heavy use of animation and effects, choosing instead a simpler visual style (illustrations are highly recommended)
  • Engage the class through a conversational style, utilizing questions and/or activities
  • Utilize multimedia, such as YouTube*
  • Conclude with a summarization of the information presented

*Here is a quick video explaining how to embed a YouTube clip into PowerPoint 2007. Embedding clips can save time during a presentation.

Reflection 01: What's the Hold Up?—Gay Athletes in Pro Sports

Out gay athletes can expect support, as well as contempt, from teammates

It is 2012 and there is not a single openly gay athlete in America's "Big Five" sports leagues: the NFL, the NBA, MLB, the NHL or MLS. Why? How have homosexuals managed to make major strides other aspects of society, including politics, religion, and the arts, but face a brick wall in pro sports? And while an increasing number of athletes have come out over the years, in sports ranging from diving to golf, no one has taken that first brave step in our biggest sports leagues. If we can safely assume there are pro athletes who are gay, why have they not come out? It is also important to note that reactions from straight pro athletes about homosexuals in pro sports has ranged from contempt to support. In 2007, former NBA guard Tim Hardaway brashly announced tha he hates gay people, while NFL linebacker Scott Fujita has been a steadfast and vocal supporter of gay rights. Still, the fact remains that no pro athlete has chosen to come out. What is your explanation? What do you think the first out athlete can expect once he makes his announcement? Finally, would you support an openly gay pro athlete?
